May Milestones

My twin boys have been busy this month, hitting all kinds of milestones and memorable moments.  People warned me magical things start happening around the six month mark and so far Jordan and Kristian haven't disappointed us.

I'll start with the achievement that has made the biggest difference in our household.  They are finally sleeping in their own cribs and sleeping MOST OF THE NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!  We have kept them in our room with us for months.  They seemed to sleep better next to each other and within arms reach of us but they were still waking up in the middle of the night.  As mommy woke up to go to work in the wee hours of the morning (my first alarm goes off at around 3:30am) daddy was often left with two babies ready to eat and/or play.  Upon advice from fellow moms I was encouraged to see how they did sleeping on their own. One mother who works in my orthodontist's office said her five month old never slept through the night until she was in her own crib so one weekend I decided to give it a shot and it was near instant success.  It was relief and a bit of sadness all at the same time.  I thought, are they supposed to be this independent already?  But the comfort of a few more hours of uninterrupted sleep quickly soothed me.  They do seem to be sleeping better and most nights if we stick to a bedtime routine they will sleep for about 8-9 hours at a time!  Even with monitors always nearby I do have to peek in and check on them several times just to make sure they're ok.  They're having a field day scooting and turning nearly every angle in their cribs.  They must switch positions ten times each night.  But they look so peaceful and sweet their in their own beds.

After their six month checkup the doctor gave the go ahead to start hitting baby food regularly so we've introduced them to bananas, peaches, applesauce, sweet potatoes (their favorite so far) and squash.  I know no green vegetables yet but the doctor told us to focus on the fruits and yellow/orange vegetables because they're higher in calories and our little preemies need to pack some more weight on to stay on the growth curve.  Now that they've made it through most of those and are eating well we can start serving up some green beans or peas with their fruity favorites.  We also pulled out their high chairs this month.
They are doing very well sitting up in them like "big boys".  Kristian has figured out he gets fed faster if he hits his hands on the tray!  So far they're being pretty patient if one of us is feeding both of them, but sometimes we just can't get those spoons to their little mouths fast enough!  Meal time is always entertaining.  Jordan's new habit is putting his fingers in his mouth and rubbing his food covered hand through his hair when he starts getting tired.  So he's gotten a shampoo after most of his dinners!

Both our boys are very close to going mobile.  They are rolling and scooting all over the place, usually in the direction of something they have no business playing with.  They're gumming furniture legs and pulling out magazines and newspapers.  Kristian is trying to sit up and Jordan can get on all fours but just can't figure out how to make that first move from there. He will probably be crawling by month's end.

Last and certainly not least, what might be my husband's favorite milestone came this past Sunday.  While I was cleaning up after the evening feeding Kristian out of nowhere belts out a loud and enthusiastic "Dada".  Then he launches into strings and strings of da-da-da-da-da and other baby babble along the way.  Jordan sat quietly smiling as if he understood everything his brother was saying.  Unfortunately daddy was out but I managed to catch the whole thing on video thanks to my camera phone.  So we've relived that moment over and over.  Still no mama yet, I'm not taking it personally though.  From everything I've read studies have found most babies say da-da before ma-ma because the da sound is just easier for them to get out.  But don't get me wrong I am anxiously waiting to hear that ma-ma sound too.
It's so true they are growing up so very fast right before our eyes!

You can see Kristian say dada below it's pretty entertaining!

Ooh, Kristy! I am a 66 year old grandmother of 2 grandsons, ages 4 years and 2 1/2 years, and I was definitely a "senior-citizen" before I became "Nene" to my beautiful boys. Please tell your mother that she is SO, SO lucky to have many years to enjoy her precious babies. I never thought I'd EVER be a grandmother! My son,his wife and my precious babies have been promoted from Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton, OH, to Andrews AFB in Washington, DC, just this past summer. Recently, before I began packing for a trip to see the "now-DC-family", I had a dream that I was YOUR mother and the grandmother to YOUR beautiful boys. I was SO nervous and frazzled trying to fulfill that task!! I don't know if you have a full-time sitter, or if your mom is always "on call" for them, but (in my dream)I experienced how much time and energy I spent constantly trying to keep up with Jordan and Kristian, and I found myself being less and less efficient trying to keep up with those beautiful babies!!! I definitely was in a full-blown melt down by the time I awoke from that dreamy experience!
Please know that I start my day with you~AND the rest of the WTVQ staff. I hang on to YOUR every word just in case J & K happen to do something which might just give us "Nenes" something to thrive on until we can cuddle our own little ones.
I'm so glad that Tom Kenny is back and is doing so well~finally!!! As well, I'm so glad to see your girlfriend, Christy Dutton, back on the week-ends for the weather............You three were the "Best of the Best", so let's hope y'all will be back together as the fabulous trio AGAIN!!
Sorry to be so verbose but I've wanted to send this to all y'all; now, since I had my "granny-dream", I thought I really should share.........................JLB, Danville, KY
