I met a really neat dog today. His name is Skeeter. He is a six year old Pomeranian. A few years ago his owner, who was a veteran, became too ill to care for Skeeter.
The spunky pup ended up at the VA where he became the resident therapy dog. Not long after his arrival he was reunited with his owner who spent his final days in hospice care at the VA. Skeeter did not leave his side.. Even after his owner passed away.. Skeeter laid next to him on the gurney for his final passage.
After Skeeter mourned the loss of his loved one… He started his mission, to bring love and comfort to the other veterans. I heard stories about Skeeters sixth sense. How he seems to know who is the sickest. He will lay in their doorways until he is invited in and then, he becomes a constant companion in their bed.
Ed Roberts is a WWII veteran. He met Skeeter when he was a patient at the VA. He says in many ways this one little dog did more for his recovery than science could. Today Mr. Roberts continues his relationship with Skeeter, but now he walks the halls with him as he volunteers weekly.
Meeting this neat little dog is a reminder about the sometime unexplainable bond between people and pets. One woman who was visiting her husband admitted their family has never owned a pet and she had no idea how beneficial pets are. She wont leave her husbands bedside at night, until Skeeter hops in bed with him. A comfort to him and to his wife who has to say goodbye at the end of each day, but knows she isn’t leaving him alone.
There are so many pets out there who have their own story. If you have one, please share your special bond so others can read a story that brings a smile and brightens a day.
