The American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA) has tracked spending of our four legged friends and has found pet owners spent more than $38-billion in 2006. A figure that has more than doubled since 1994.

The expenses run the gamut from the basics like food, veterinary care and toys. But apparently we are not just buying traditional kibble at the local mart and getting that once a year physical at the vet.

Pet owners are spending money on fancy food and gourmet treats that look so good you may want to bite into one. We are also taking advantage of expanded veterinary services.  I know all about that with my dogs chemotherapy.  But there are many veterinary specialists out there.  People are spending money on dermatology care, joint replacement surgeries, delicate eye procedures, root canals… Yes, root canals for a dog.

During a recent visit to my dog’s vet he developed kennel anxiety and was attempting to chew his way out of the metal cage.  He did some significant damage to his teeth and after a specialist took a look at it, it was suggested he get a few root canals to repair the damage.

Now as devoted as I am to my dog and as much money as I have invested in his chemotherapy treatment I have to draw the line somewhere! I think root canals and caps with a little Bling! Bling! is where I must draw the line.  Can you imagine a dog flashing four gold canines?!

The APPMA’s National Pet Owners Survey also indicates pet owners treat them more like a member of the family than just an animal.
The Survey found 27% of dog owners and 13% of cat owners buy birthday presents for their pet.  It doesn’t stop there.  That tops out during the holidays: 55% of dog owners and 37% of cat owners wrap a gift and put it under the tree.
