"I think they should stop that. Stop providing services for illegals." Anonymous
"I really think that illegal immigrants should not be given social services..." Anonymous
"I worked hard for what I got. No. No. They shouldn't get it." Anonymous
"I think all services to illegal aliens should end ASAP." Anonymous
"Social services should be extended to illegal immigrants. Of course, they are working in the community because they are needed and because they also tend to pay taxes." Anonymous
"If somebody is not a citizen of the United States they should not get social services." Anonymous
"The illegal immigrants should go home and stop all this free benefits." Anonymous
"The state of Kentucky should not, under any circumstances, foot the bill for the illegal immigrants that are in the city of Lexington. There are enough problems in this state without trying to take care of people from another country." Anonymous
"As long as they here and pay taxes and stuff - I don't have a problem, but I don't think that the sheltering and free stuff should be allowed." Anonymous
"It's time for Kentuckians to stand together and not foot the bill for illegal immigrants." Anonymous
"There is no way that illegal immigrants should get free medical care when other people can't. I think it is so absurd and ridiculous, but that's our world." Anonymous
"These people pay nothing and then the real citizens are stuck paying the bills..." Anonymous
"We have men and women dying overseas for Americans in this war. If they do not want to be Americans legally then send em home where they belong. Enough is enough." Anonymous
"This is absolutely ridiculous. Caring about the well-being, including the physical health, of a city's residents...all of the residents...should not be politicized. This is a basic civil rights, humanity, issue: People need health care, even at the most basic level. It is the city's responsibility to ensure those services are made available. Anyone who supports this lawsuit should be ashamed of themselves! Renee
"Your comments are distressingly uninformed. Please do your research. Find out what the law is and what Lexington does...Just reporting what someone says is not being responsible. For example, Lexington does not issue food stamps. What do you mean by "health care?" Does the Urban County Government provide health care to anyone?" Marilynn
"I Absolutely agree with Dr. Duncan. Our tax money going to people who are in this country illegally, who have and continue to break our laws, should not be rewarded in any way. We have plenty of American citizens who need help, lets look after them. Dee
"It's simply wrong when U.S. citizens and LEGAL residents who respect this country and it's laws encounter more red tape trying to receive "social services" than the criminal illegals. Robin
"Immigrants I know - work very hard and take care of their families with no help and are good people.Thats more than i can say for a lot of U.S. citizens drawing government checks for disabilities but partying and wasting it on alcohol, drugs, etc when they could get off their toosh and work." Paula
"I think you all are doing a great job on your news show, so keep up the good work." Summer |

This week you told us how you felt about those accused of breaking into local churches, how we treated Rick Pitino and how we cover the weather. Plus, we were basically blessed by a priest. Read on for this week's viewer comments in our Viewer Voice Report.
Early in the week we showed Rick Pitino at a charity golf tournament. We also showed him miss a putt and we used it in our play of the day. Well, Terry from Georgetown didn't like it. "I just saw the Play of the Day and it had Rick Pitino on there shooting. And because he missed a shot for a bogey you all televised it. Is that slighted journalism or what? Come on, give the guy a break." Terry, give us a break. It was all in good fun. And truth be told I asked the photographer about the video and he said he was actually shooting at the time in hopes that Pitino would make the putt.
A viewer called to say she recorded nearly two inches of rain at her home in Anderson County in one day. In fact, she said she was "one tenth of an inch short of two inches." Thanks for keeping us updated. And another viewer wanted me to pass on a message to the weather department. "Please have them keep Somerset on the map. Thank You." Anonymous
We received praise for covering a story, earlier in the month, surrounding of the ordination of A Roman Catholic Woman Priest at the Unitarian Universalist Church.
The email reads, "The reporter was most respectful and did a superb job as did the cameraman. Yours was the only station in Lexington to cover this event -- which is a historical moment in the Roman Catholic Church." Janice
And speaking of church, after we showed you the suspects in a number of Lexington church break-ins, you let us know what you thought about them.
"I'm was just sick sitting here listening to that...Why do we have to suffer of them doing the bad things to this church, that church and other churches?" Anonymous
"I hope that they're caught. I hope that they are prosecuted to the full extent to the law and made an example of..." Anonymous
"...everyone of them is going to hell." Anonymous
"Some people just need Jesus in their life, and if everyone continues to pray for them, hopefully they'll realize what they done and come forward." Anonymous
Thanks for calling and emailing.

The days of seeing those short shorts at Rupp Arena are several years behind us, but this week you and other viewers were able to bring the two together, sort of. You see, both 'short shorts' and Rupp Arena are topics this week. Fortunately, they have nothing to do with each other.
So, for those of you who are playing from home or from your office, let me explain. This week we told you about a Garrard County woman who was tossed in jail when a judge deemed the shorts she was wearing during her court room appearance to be out of line. Judge Janet Booth sent Kirstie Arnold to jail. That sparked this response from Denise. "If you are a grown woman and you don't know how to dress when you are going before a judge, then there is something wrong with you. I don't care how cute you think you are. You need to dress decent and you need to dress your age when you are going before a judge." I personally thought it was a crime of fashion, but that's just me. Here's the real kick in the shorts - when Arnold went to the jail police found cocaine prescription pills in her purse and now she faces a 'long' list of charges.
Now to a topic that generated the most response from viewers this week: Corporal punishment in schools. That’s the nice way of saying spanking or paddling. It came up when we reported about an issue in another state. Here are the comments you called or emailed us. Be warned you might want to put on some extra underwear before you read on.
"If parents can’t control the children, then the school needs to." Sam
"I believe if the paddle was brought back the kids would know the school wasn't going to put up with them, acting out, bullying each other, making threats." Anonymous
"Spank their butts. That's all." Vic
"I don't believe school corporal punishment brings up any trust issues between students, teachers and principals. Lack of correction among students sort of sends a message to do what you want because you won't get corrected, you will only get expelled. Expelling a student only gives a student a vacation." James
"Were sending a message to kids that violence is OK, if you have to worry about getting beat at home and at school. I don't know about that. I don't think that's a good idea." Anonymous
Next topic. Rupp Arena. This week we told you about a possible plan to build a new arena and make changes to Commonwealth Stadium.
A viewer then sent us this email. "This is a horrible idea. U.K. needs to make an arena on its campus and get away from the city of Lexington.
U.K. would be better off and better served for the students to have it's own arena. That way students could actually get down on the floor and watch a game..."
We also aired a couple stories about the move by some folks to lower the legal drinking age to 18. That had this viewer reaching for his phone to simply say. "They want to put more immature drivers on the road. I've got a two year old son, I'll pass." I'm with you on that. I don't have two year old, but I have an 18 year old. So, I will assume I don't have to explain myself.
We here at WTVQ/Action News 36 also took a few hits this week. First Daryl called to say instead of doing stories we are teasing stories for later newscasts and to get you to visit our web page - like you are doing right now. Another viewer said we are repeating stories from 5 to 5:30 to 6.
However, Judi emailed and while it wasn't about short shorts she did pull out her Fashion Police Badge on us. She asked if anchors could "coordinate their wardrobes before co-anchoring the news. Their colors don't have to match, but they definitely should not clash. Hot Pink and Fire Engine Red side by side...is an assault to the visual senses."
And Debra complained because we currently air a car commercial for one of our clients in Spanish. She says, "This is America and we speak English in America."
We also took a few calls an emails about the whereabouts of Megan Newquist. She is no longer working at WTVQ. She decided to pursue other opportunities a few weeks ago. She is still in the Lexington area and doing well. I talk to her on a regular basis and have been passing on your messages.
And finally, I want to thank those of you who have called and emailed to say you will miss me when I leave. I truly appreciate your kind words.
See you on TV, Don

This week you and other viewers had a lot to say about the news stories we shared with you. And your reaction ranged from lightbulbs to Brad James to Lexington water fountains and a fatal shooting.
Let's start with the light bulb story. We told you about Brown University students handing out compact fluorescent light bulbs to the needy. The bulbs use less energy than regular or incandescent bulbs, but a viewer pointed out , "...CFL bulbs have mercury in them..." and that you almost need training to dispose of them or dealing with broken CFL bulbs. He went on to say we should add that fact to any story we do on the bulbs in the future. He also sent a link to the EPA rules for safe disposal. Here are two links to check out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-LOtKIIKcg and http://www.epa.gov/bulbrecycling/manage.htm .
Now on to the rest of the comments this week.
"For entertainment, weather, sports or news, Channel 36 is what I chose." Callie
There were plenty of nice things said about us, but most of the love was for Brad James, who retired on Thursday.
"He is one of the best weatherman that I have ever listened to and watched and i'm really going to miss Brad." Anonymous
"I've seen him in the store before and he's like real down to earth and stopped and had a coversation with me. So, I'm really going to miss Brad James." Anonymous
"I have watched this channel for years and its my favorite place to watch and I hate to see him go." Anonymous
"Dear Brad. You are one of a kind. I have always watched and I am really going to miss you and your good weather reports. May God Bless You." Pam
Well love was in the air, and in the water. When we asked for your opinion about kids playing in the downtown Lexington fountains, most of you said, you liked it.
TIedyeavenger wrote, "Watching kids play in the fountain is one of the best things about my commute home, and the sounds of laughter are a background to my day." Tiedieavenger
But there were others who have a different view - like R.S. who writes, "Not everybody like to hear the screams of children and see them acting like animals in public." R.S.
The story that may have created the biggest buzz was the one about Joshua Pyles, a Pulaski County man who shoot and killed a man who was apparently threatening him and wouldn't leave his property.
Robert emailed to say, "He made a reasonable demand for these scumbags to take themselves and their deadly intentions out of his home. The fatal results are solely the fault of the three dirt bags." Robert
Rory simply writes, "Chalk up one more for the good guys!" Rory
Ashram sent this email. "It's sad that a life had to be taken. But, the context of the killing was that the attackers were warned with the presence of lethal force to leave after trespassing the victim's property with intent to harm him. When I say "victim," I mean the homeowner who was being threatened by the three attackers and not the one attacker who had been shot dead by the victim. Anyway, the attackers failed to take heed of that warning and one of them paid for that mistake with his life." Ashram
And Adam wrote more about our coverage of the story than the facts of the case. "It's good to see a gun related self-defense reported by the media. Kudos to you WTVQ!" Adam
But not everyone was happy with us.
Dave called twice to say we should have had more coverage on that stabbing and decapitation that happened on a bus up in Canada.
"It's really newsworthy. It's way more newsworthy than a lot of the local news in Kentucky." Dave
Then Debra let us know she does not like the fact that we air a used car commercial on our station in Spanish.
"This is America and we speak English in America. America is not a bi-lingual country." Debra
But this call saved the day.
"I do have a compliment to make. I really thought you guys did a good job tonight...leading with an education story in the 5:30 newscasts. I'm so tired of routine stories about police cases that are just straight off the police blotter, but I was really please to see an education story lead at 5:30. So, compliments to you for a story that really matters." Anonymous
Thank you for your comments and for watching.

This week our viewers had a lot to say, and most of it was about that 'writ' filled against Lexington and the state of Kentucky regarding services for illegal immigrants. We'll get to those comments, but we begin with Aleda's question. "What's the difference between recession, depression, and inflation?... Government and media keep talking about them, but to me they're just words. thanks." |

Let me get out of the way and allow you to tell us how you feel. This week viewers were thinking about gas prices and police officers.
The first comment was aimed at Kentucky State Police. "...they obviously have no problem driving around (State Cruisers) as a personal vehicle. I see them all the time driving around town..." And the next comment was aimed at Nicholasville Police and Jessamine County Sheriff's Deputies. "How the police officers and sheriff's and deputy sheriffs and all that, can drive their vehicles - their police patrol cars - to go do other work, security work?"

This week the two most popular issues: Gas Prices and Rebate Checks. Let me begin a few of your questions. Sheila called and left this message, "I'd like to know what the government is going to do about the gas prices?" And Trina asked this question, "Answer me this. How does Bush get away with having so much money and jacking the gas prices up on the poor people?"

Today we are focusing on the money we are spending on gas and the money we want from those rebate checks. Let's begin with gas prices and what they are doing to some folks here in the bluegrass. Here are the words left on our Viewer Voice Line.

The biggest story of the week was also the saddest story of the week - the murder suicide out in Western Kentucky.
A lot has been said about it and a lot of questions have been asked about it. And I think Jeff summed it up by saying, "This is terrible. How can people do things like this?" |
