GRC Mourns Student's Death
Wednesday, 03 September 2008 17:51

A freshman at George Rogers Clark High School died Tuesday at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Clark County Schools Superintendent Dr. Ed Musgrove says he was told 14-year-old McKenna Hatchett died of a staph infection, though her pastor says the family is still unsure exactly what caused her death.

McKenna was in the ninth grade and on the soccer team.

She had recently hurt her hip, but no one thought it was a serious injury. Reverend Kenny Speaks, pastor of Mt. Zion Christian Church where McKenna and her family attended services, says she collapsed in the emergency room on Tuesday.

Speaks says doctors tried repeatedly to revive her to no avail.  Funeral services will be held for McKenna at Mt. Zion Christian in Winchester at 11 a.m.

McKenna’s family has informed us that they have set up a memorial fund in her name.  Donations can be made at the Kentucky Utilities Employees Credit Union, off Quality Street in downtown Lexington.

I am very sorry for the family's lost. I am very surprised that docotrs didn't recongize the infection sooner. I am a student at Dunbar High School and is a staff member of the school news paper. I thought that the topic of Staph Infections would be a good thing to write about in the sports section to let fellow students aware of the things that a minor scarp can cause an athlete. If anyone who has information on this article other than what is listed or was there first hand when it happen, can you please contact me. I will really appreciate it. Thank You.
