Photographer Discusses Arrest at GOP Convention

A photographer with ties to UK's student-run newspaper spoke to WTVQ 36 News Wednesday, two days after his arrest at the Republican National Convention.

Twenty-six-year-old Jim Winn, a photo advisor for the Kentucky Kernel was arrested Monday outside the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota along with U.K. students Ed Matthews and Britney McIntosh. The three were not covering the event for the Kernel, they were just covering it for their own purposes.

Wednesday night, Winn spoke with WTVQ 36 News from St. Paul where he was released from jail earlier in the day. He says the group was covering the riots early Monday when they began following one of the smaller break-out groups, which eventually got out of hand and was the subject of several arrests. "It was mostly a case of police gathering everyone in sight" Winn said. "We all tried to make sure that people knew we had credentials and ID that showed we were media beyond the camera equipment we were carrying" but Winn says in the heat of the moment, police had a difficult decision to make as to who was a protestor and who was not. "In this case it was just a matter of regardless of who you were, or what credentials you had, you were going to be brought in", and all three were held for nearly 36 hours along with dozens of others arrested Monday for felony rioting.

After covering several riots in the past, Winn says he, McIntosh and Matthews were well aware of the potential dangers and possibilities of being arrested, "It comes with the territory, I knew that, so did the students who came from U.K.". Tuesday, WTVQ 36 News spoke with Kentucky Kernel editor in chief Brad Luttrell who said their arrests were a violation of their first amendment rights, but Winn is much more relaxed about the whole ordeal, "I don't hold any hard feelings because it was a decision I made and I knew it was possible from prior experience". Winn tells WTVQ 36 News he's just glad no one was injured.

So far, all charges have been dropped against Winn, McIntosh and Matthews, pending further investigation.
