The first class of juniors took the test, which checks college readiness in English, math, reading and science, last spring. Scores from the nearly 43,000 Kentucky students who took the ACT were released Thursday. Scoring is based on a scale from one to 36. Kentucky's average composite score was 18.3, three full points below the nationwide average for the class of 2008. Four of Lexington's five high schools were in the top 16 among Kentucky's 232 high schools. Bryan Station was the only school below the statewide average. Fayette County Schools Superintendent Stu Silberman says a plan is in place to improve the academic achievement at that school. Each subject tested has a benchmark score. Less than half of the Kentucky students who took the mandated test reached the benchmark. English, benchmark 18, 46% met the benchmark Reading, benchmark 21, 33% met the benchmark Math, benchmark 22, 20% met the benchmark Science, benchmark 24, 15% met the benchmark Both educators and students tell WTVQ that making the college entrance exam mandatory is a good idea because it encourages students, who may not have previously considered or paid for the test, to take it and attend college.
