The Jessamine County Humane Society says it will no longer
manage the county’s animal shelter. On September 20th the shelter will be turned over to the fiscal court who will then determine what entity, if any will oversee its operation.
The Humane Society had contracted with the fiscal court since 2000 to operate the facility.
The Humane Society President, Kim Hurst, says it has become too expensive for her organization to continue operating the facility.
The Humane Society has been raising money and has purchased property in Nicholasville to build and operate a shelter.
Hurst says the organization will focus on that now.
A Nicholasville city commissioner says he has some questions about the shelter’s operations and says tax returns show the Jessamine County Humane Society has more than a million dollars in the bank.
Chris Moore says he’s not accusing anyone of wrongdoing but he wishes the organization would have answered some questions before deciding to discontinue operating the shelter.
