The Webb Companies disagreed in the historic value of the buildings along Main Street which are ready to be demolished for their CentrePointe Development, but Lexington Firefighters saw plenty of value in the buildings, they saw it as a training exercise.
Wednesday afternoon crews helped with the demolition of the former Rite-Aid building at the corner of Limestone and Main Street. Action News 36 was the only television crew to ride up to the roof-top with firefighters where they got a chance to practice cutting holes in the roof, an exercise in ventilation. Captain Harold Oney tells Action News 36 that ventilation is key to saving lives and making fighting a fire easier on crews if a downtown building with multiple levels ever caught fire. Since a Fayette County Judge has ruled that demolition on the rest of the buildings in that block can go on without delay, Lexington fire crews will have more chances to assist in a little demolition. “We love to practice our skills, we love the opportunity to do it and since we don’t get to do it as much as we’d like to, when we get the opportunity we jump on it” Captain Oney said. Demolition on the CentrePointe block is expected to get well underway this week. If you need to travel in the downtown area, watch out for traffic delays and possible lane closures near the demoltion.
