The first vaccines will be in the form of a nasal spray known by the brand name FluMist, but because the inhaled spray does contain a weakened live flu virus it’s only recommended for healthy individuals ages 2-49. As health departments across the state receive the vaccines next week they will be asked to offer it to priority groups including healthcare workers and caregivers for children under 6-months of age. Thursday in a teleconference, the state public health commissioner offered assurance that the H1N1 vaccine will be as safe as your seasonal flu shot. Dr. William Hacker, Kentucky’s DPH Commissioner says, “It's actually not a new vaccine it's the same vaccine as seasonal flu it just has a new formulation. But they change the formulation of the seasonal flu shot every year because the virus itself shifts every year and it's the same process so that allows us to be confident in its safety and certainly I'll recommend it to my family." Each of the state’s heath departments will receive 100 or more doses of the vaccine initially based on population, and more doses will be available to the state each day over the next several weeks.
